The Canadian Opera Company’s 2019/2020 season opens with Puccini’s Turandot. This breathtaking opera tells the story of Calaf as he plays a
deadly game to win Princess Turandot’s hand in marriage: answer all three of her riddles correctly, or die. Visionary American theatre director Robert Wilson makes his COC debut with a distinctly modern and minimalist production that echoes Turandot’s glacial demeanor through clean lines and sleek minimalism.
American sopranos Tamara Wilson and Marjorie Owens share the lead role of Turandot, while Russian tenor Sergey Skorokhodov sings the world’s most famous tenor aria, “Nessun Dorma,” in his COC debut as Calaf. Lebanese-Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury and American soprano Vanessa Vasquez share the role of the devoted Liù.
