Famous guitarist Kirk Hammett, of the heavy metal band Metallica, has created one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of classic horror and sci-fi movie posters. Organized and toured by the Peabody Essex Museum, this exhibition explores Hammett’s significant collection and examines the connection between artistry, emotion, and popular culture through a selection of works from 20th-century cinema. Over 130 works — rare, original movie posters, lobby cards, custom-painted guitars/cases, movie props, costumes — examine how powerful graphic art communicates and evokes emotion, inspiring creativity in other areas. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience an intersection of popular art and culture that sheds light on generational attitudes, cultural consumption habits, and artistic progressions of the genre through the ages.
